Right, I know this has come up alot, and that we're all busy at the moment, but I think it would really help the project if we actually got a taster article done for the second issue of DM, for a number of reasons. If anything, it would remind people we exist, and perhaps get us a few more regulars (which we need to keep things going, or at least speed them up) if it's good enough...
However, I'm not sure what we should do. I don't think it needs to be long or anything - but it needs to be very good. Which is the problm...what do we do? A cross section of our work so far? A general, OOC overview? An introductory thing, with not much but a few snippets, but a bit on who we are, etc? A sort of datasheet on the planet - you know, what might be the frontpage of an administratum report or something? A combination thereof?
Thoughts?

an in character journal of an inquisitor as he tracks someone across and back off the planet perhaps? (thinking along the lines of Mr VanHelsers Journal Ic which he has used to introduce a new character he is playing with now.)
This kind of thing could have just several short entires, with a couple days gap between them - for instance:
Day 87 of the hunt for the renegrade Valcraft, Today we finally arrived at the planet of St. Martius' Bounty after a somewhat slow journey through the warp from Benigra, where we have left Sergeant Kranst to recover properly from his wounds suffered during the last face-to-face encounter with Valcraft. I just hope our slight delay in the warp will not have given him too much of a head start as he makes his buisness on yet another planet.
Day 89 of the hunt for the renegrade Valcraft, I find myself most intruiged by the floating "hivebergs" of this planet, simply marvolous contructs, this evening I will be leaving the land-based captail, St. Martius' Cove, by air to travel to Ogenberg, which appears to have been where Valcraft made planetfall, rather than the captial. Here's hoping that I find him there and can trap him on the moving island of rock and metal.
Day 91 of the hunt for the renegrade Valcraft, After extensive hunting through port and landing deck records, dear Dathe discovered that we had infact missed Valcraft by an hour. The renegrade trader had left by speedship for the shore of the continent, heading for a small isolated settlement called Huan'Viar, Dathe tells me it is unusual in that it is inhabited by more tribal descendents than it is imperial coliniser descendents. But whatever, the Emperors work must be done, and so we shall be leaving Ogenberg on Valcrafts tail once again, but we shall be forced to travel by air rather than sea, as Ogenberg has since moved into the area known as the Norrian Sea, the largest 'body' of water close to the continent. Though it is beyond me how the locals can divide a planet-covering ocean into different areas like this.
Day 94 of the hunt for the renegrade Valcraft, Well, this was something I had not been expecting as part of the hunt for this particular renegrade. But it is of no consequence, I do what I must so ensure the safety of the Imperium from renegrades and heretics. My warband and I are currently riding through the jungle to another smaller township further down the coast where Valcraft is reported to have been headed. The creaures we ride are quite something and if it were not for the job at hand I would be entertaining my hobby of xenobiology and finding out as much as I could about the jungle around me and these six-limbed 'Adamantodon' which we ride upon. Our guides on this short journey are a trio of brothers with tribal hearitage and learning, it is their Adamantodon upon which we and our equipment ride, while the three locals walk ahead, leading the large beasts of burden onwards. Morros, the catachan jungle fighter in my band, has commented that there are some compairibles to his homeworld. I for one hope they are passive ones rather than the likes of the Catachan Devils I met the last time I visited that jungle world.

Ooh...that's a good idea. With a bit of work to ensure that enough little details got in (and perhaps if we managed to persuade Sumaki to do some sktches for it, as if they were done by the Inquisitor's hand) that would be a really nice article...

looks good for a start add in a bit of action and drama and it should be a good read, perhaps if we each selected to add bits into to the time line for various aspects then we could extend and add more details to it.
Day 92 of the hunt for the renegrade Valcraft, We intercepted Valcraft his ship had been delays thank the Emperor and he was forced to abandon his flight to the continent, but the renegade showed us just how far he was willing to go to escape capture. The coward fled to the Refinery Sector of this most Impressive "Hivebergs" the very fact that they act like a membrane drawing in the oceans of this world is beyond my understanding. There he killed a dozen of the refinery workers and while he eluded us. to further aid his escape he opened fire upon the refinery tanks starting a chain reaction. I'd heard tale of the purity and combustibility of the fuels St Martius' Bounty produce but seeing their raw power first had has confirmed their potency. His selfless act has crippled Ogenberg and sealed off a quarter of their mighty refinery while it is repaired as well as preventing us from further pursuit as we were forced to divert around the fires, by the time he had once again picked up his trail he had fled on a speedship. I suspect he had taken the crew hostage and intends to kill them when his destination is reached, I hope we can intercept him before that time comes.

Hrm...I'd be cautious of having people contribute in bits and pieces to this thing in particular. I know this is a community project, but I worry that in such a piece where (unless were trying to portray a madman of some sort) the voice needs to be consistent throughout, having several people write it might obscure that somewhat. Perhaps it would be better everyone helped work out the storyline, and then one (elected, if people want) person writes it up. That, or someone edits all the entries to give them some sense of unity.

I agree things need to be submitted by a single writer not multiple but there is nothing to stop multiple writers submitting ideas here and then it being edited down to a final draft

if ideas for what gets covered and how it gets covered are given, I am willing to do the drafts for inspection and final submission. remember that this isn't really something we want to be huge, at an absolute maximum i would have thought that one page would be enough.
hmm... i have a rather good looking but highly legible "handwritten" typeface on photoshop (not one of the standard ones) that could be used, make it a real Journal, I simply take a photo of a blank page in an old book with slightly yellowing paper (plenty like that in this house) and simply allign and enter the text to fit. Going for an image as the entire page, but still containing the entire "article".

The DM team will format it themselves to their own requirements, I'm afraid Vendile, so any formatting we do will be lost. However, I'm sure Caro or myself would be perfectly willing to pass on your suggestions for the formatting to the technical boys, as it sounds about right. But they do also have to ensure the whole thing fits in with the general formatting theme of DM itself.
I like the idea of journal entries, and the ideas submitted so far are good. However, I think it should be accompanied by snippets in different media. For example, Sumaki could be asked to do some sketches perhaps of a tribesman and an Adamantodon, as if the Inquisitor did it himself, then there could be a short attached administratum report, perhaps on one of the Hive Bergs, and maybe an abbreviated version fo Storm's Adamantadon bio-sheet. That way the teaser is a little longer, but id't be worth it to allow the DM readers a fuller glimpse into the variety of things we've been coming up with.

I'd agree with pretty much everything Mohauk said in that last bit - if we could get a few sketches in of stuff, that would be nice. And the abbreviated version of the data sheet things has potential...I don't know if you remember from the planning stages of DM, Mohauk, but there was some discussion of certain things being done to look like they were clipped in - pictures and the like. I reckon that would work with these little extra bits - do you think it might be worth requesting it?

As has been noted, we really want submissions to be as plain as possible. However, your ideas sound much like other plans we have for DM, and since you seem to have thought this through we would have no problems with you submitting the article (as .DOC, .RFT or .TXT) together with stuff you want to include in the layout (typeface, background, images, etc) - you could even attach comments on how you would like it to be layouted and formatted. Just make sure to keep everything separate.
