post them up in a locked thread in this section, and let it be there as something interesting and rough - all projects need that kind of thing to help them along.

Can threads be locked and unlocked? If so, it might be worth locking this for a while, and finishing off several other threads. Once other subjects are finalised, an all encompassing collection of the best ideas can be collected here to form the final history of the planet and its inspirational leader.

Oh yes, it can be locked and unlocked quite easily...as vendile says, the systems very versatile...equally, I'm not sure that that's totally necessary...after all, if thoughts elsewhere can define this, things can happen the other way round...

Ok St. Martius rewritten
St. Martius or as he was known before his sainthood Martius Belasksun (name is progress) was a noble born and breed a true blood blue of the Highest of Imperial Families, his military carer empowered by his father ensured that he rose through the ranks despite several failings as a military commander, it was during this rapid accent through the ranks that he came to depend upon his lesser officers, and his NCOs for command, while this went majority unnoticed by Higher Command his regiment and then later battalion went on from strength to strength, achieving victory through the masterful commandry of his officers in the wake of his lack of experience.
When the Ironclad Crusade against a massive Ork Waargh came about and call for Military Regiments were issued, Martius using his families wealth was able to purchase into Crusade Command, with the Rank of Lord General, and was assigned lordship of the Second Front, with his promotion Martius made numerous spectacular and ill advised promotions of his original Battalions officers and other like minded officers, placing them well beyond their depth within crusade command.
With these first mistakes on Martius part the whole Second Front was lacking any true experience their floundered against the enemy's superior numbers and raw strength, with many battles being drawn out on dozens of worlds for most of the Crusade as Imperial Guard and Ork forces ground against one another. The supply lanes of the second front were all but cut off during the worst period of the Second Front’s crusade and the moral all but shattered after a string of crushing defeats at the hands of the Orks. During this time Martius' personal battle ship and escorts were set upon by a daring yet small Ork fleet intent on proving themselves to the Big Bosses of the Waargh. With superior strength at his command Martius fleet commander capitalised on this turn of fortune and engages winning the day for the Imperials, their weigh of fire power forcing the Orks lead cruiser to crash land on an uncharted oceanic world.
Eager to end the Ork threat Martius determined to win a true and complete victory against the Orks, enough to bolster moral within his crumbling ranks ordered the ground forces deployed to hunt down the enemy and a bitter skirmish war fare broke out along the coast of the singular landmass of the world.
It was during this conflict, that a tech priest assigned to the crusade by the name of Dyalz Cognit discovered an interesting nature of the "water" of the world, and after a short experiment he was able to formulate a basic method of refining fuel. With this basic is unstable fuel source Martius was able to refuel his armoured divisions that had until then been almost useless in the skirmish, with the advantage of armoured support the victory was quick to follow.
From there Cognit was able to refine the process to make the fuel purer and of much better and more stable quality using the now established Cognit Process, which allowed Martius to free up his none existent supply lines and refuel his entire second front, leading to major victories on several worlds.
During the later years of the Crusade with a new War Master in place, who used vastly different tactics than his predecessor Martius followed in his foot steps fearful he may be replaced by a more able man, He started taking to the fields of battle leading from the front as the War Master was famous for, It was during one battle that Martius and his senior staff grossly underestimated the enemy forces, forced back to a ruined chapel and on the brink of destruction Martius took himself away from his fellow officer to pray to the Emperor in the remains of the altar.
When he returned he was a changed man, zeal had come to him, anger and fury, he gathered the remains of the men’s shattered moral and remoulded it with only a few words that have made commissars jealous ever since, he strode out to face the enemy, pacing into the fray all his enemies fire power seeming to inexplicably miss him.
In combat he could not be bested his power sword, mark of his station, gift from the previous war master, made short work of any Ork that stood before him, he and his men carved out the heart of the enemy's force, though many of them died the Imperial Banner never fell as it drew closer to the Ork War boss, not even his mega armoured Nobs could slow Martius as he cut through them to engage the War boss himself, despite the wounds he'd received during this heroic charge and despite the Orks brutal agility and speed, Martius bested him, claiming the vile Xenos' head.
Seeing their War boss cut down his head held aloft the Orks took flight and scattered, Martius was heralded as a living saint by his men, and led them to many more victories, eventually becoming War Master himself, though by the time Martius took the mantle the crusade was all but over, there only remained small pockets of Ork forces, but he diligently hunted them down and wiped them out.
Upon completion of the crusade Martius was awarded a world which he could claim as his own, he chose the world that had started his carer to path to greatness, that oceanic world with its singular landmass it was re-designated as Martius’ Hope.
Thirty years after, the Ironclad Crusades completion a massive secessionists uprising occurred and the sectors capital world *** fell into their hands. These secessionists denounced the divinity of the God Emperor and called for the destruction of all Imperial churches.
Upon hearing the terrible news, and the horrific notion that these secessionists planned to destroy the High Cathedral to the God Emperor, wiping out not only a strong beacon of belief in the Holy god Emperor in the sector but also killing the entire higher echelons of the Ecclesiarchy the retired Lord General now Planetary Governor Martius immediately set about forming a task force to rush to the church’s aid scrounging up as many ex-guardsmen and PDF as he could find and recruiting many former crusade veterans from Martius’ Hope. He left his world on a new crusade.
Stopping at every planet on their way his inspiring speeches ensured that more men joined his cause including ship captains and rogue traders, and continued bolstered the men currently in his ranks making them eager for action, with noble words and religious fury at the defiling of the Grand Cathedral, Martius ensured that his men would fight their hardest for the faith.
Upon arrival on *** system he encountered several guard regiments on the outer worlds lost and confused with lack of commands from the utterly destroyed higher military command on ***, assuming command of these regiments he ordered his makeshift fleet to engage the blockage fleet of the secessionists, while he landed troops
Making planet fall the Army of Lord Governor Martius struck hard and fast gaining ground rapidly against the Secessionists’ army, with his ad-hoc mix of Guard, Arbiters, PDF, religiously-driven recruits and retired veterans. He managed to secure the High Cathedral’s grounds and dug in for a prolonged siege.
During this time fleet, despite the majority of the ships been well armed trader vessels fight a gruelling space battle and many a valiant effort and noble self-sacrifices is made. Though the fleet is eventually utterly wiped out by superior numbers of warship, they did succeed in inflicting major damage to many of the secessionist fleet, with several ships being mortally wounded as trader ships and frigates resorted to last ditch ramming tactics even as their warp drives and plasma reactors were overloading.
On the world below illuminated by the epic battle in the stars the fighting Martius showed his tactical brilliance by quickly set-up a strong defensive line within the Cathedral grounds, and creating massive avenues of death as the enemy were forces to flood down them. Added to these masterful defensive tactics Martius’ men were inspired with courage and religious zeal, the ad-hoc force fighting fiercely as they defending the sacred ground from every attack launched against them.
Upon their arrival at High Cathedral they were greeted by a number of priests and the remains of the loyalist, guardsmen and civilians who had been holding the Cathedrals as best they could, many families were hidden in the catacombs and this bolstered Martius’ determination even further, after a short speech to them all those able to immediately grabbed weapons to join in the defence.
The stand lasted three days, before the biggest and final assaults on the cathedral occurred, it was later discovered that the secessionists fleet had been wiped out by an Imperial Fleet coming to their aid, though some reports had been picked up during the night they were unconfirmed. It has since been reasoned that the secessionists were determined that when the Imperial Force arrived the High Cathedral would not be left to recover, making the Imperial victory a hallow one. Needless to say their assault was massive and hammered against the Cathedral defences, breaking through at no less than a dozen places and forcing the defenders to fall back to the cathedral itself.
It was during this final attempt to destroy the cathedral that Lord Governor Martius, who was leading the defence from the front like he had done during the Ironclad Crusade, was surrounded as he and his personal bodyguards gave cover for those withdrawing along with other professional guard units. The Platoons to either side of his own command group were both overrun almost simultaneously leaving the Lord Governor cut off from retreat.
The fighting in this area was desperate, many of the Martius own command platoon who had been friends for many year dying to ensure Martius’ survival, he watches as each one of his long time friends fell to the enemy as they tried to get him to the safety of the Cathedral. A counter-attack formed from those who Martius had inspired made up of mainly civilians smashed into the enemy ranks with total disregard for their own lives they fought hard and desperately to get to Martius dragging his injured body back to the safety of the cathedral.
Within the archway of the High Cathedral doors protected by the other defenders Martius was laid down, Governor Martius suffered several serious wounds during that final attack the worst being a blade wound to his midsection that simply refused to stop bleeding. Despite his wounds he insisted on standing supported by Captain Robart Darstes of Martius’ Hope’s PDF, He watched as the Imperial Forces unleashed death upon the secessionists’ first in a vicious air strike and then as guard forces landed.
Insisting that he give thanks to the Most Holy Altar of the God Emperor, his strength failed him and he finally fell, his men around him led by Captain Darstes carried Governor Martius to the Altar where his last words were whispered to those tearful me.
"I die knowing this most holy ground will continue to be defended to the last by these righteous servants of the Emperor, that my work is done and that he is please with it."
Imperial reports state that guard units came across 87 survivors of the defence force of the High Cathedral. They are also reported as having been shouting "For the Emperor! For Martius!" as a battle cry whilst they Defending the body of Governor Martius and Holy Altar of the God Emperor from the last of the enemy that had breeched the cathedral.
Lord General Yunron, who had known Martius as a Lord General during the entirety of the Ironclad Crusade and had been a close friend before his retirement was in command of the relief force organised to retake the planet it is recorded that Lord Yunron stated regarding the manner of the Governors death.
"The old bugger was always destined to die in a heroic last stand like this, stealing all the bloody glory from us poor buggers still serving."
Two of the surviving priests from the ordeal in the cathedral told of a golden light shimmering round the Lord Governor while he was fighting, they told of enemy fire inexplicably missing the man where they cut down others. After the complete crushing of the secessionists’ rebellion they pressed for Martius' sainthood.
It was also reported that upon Martius death on *** the star of Martius’ Hope erupted in the most violent flaring that had ever occurred during the Imperial occupation, It is also reported that dozens of smaller events took place on the day of Martius’ death across the worlds, some say they saw the governor floating above the capital Martius’ Hope. Others report of sick and dying people of Martius’ Hope suddenly recovering saying that Martius had gifted them with health.
It took seventy two years after the events on *** and the complied reports from Martius’ Hope, along with dozens of reports filtering to the Ecclesiarchy on each year after Martius’ death of Miracles and vicious solar flares. Though throughout this time Martius was being recognised as a saint across the sector his ascension to sainthood was not formally announced until after All Saints Day of the twentieth year after his death, where it was reported that he appeared at the Most Holy Altar of the God Emperor before the congregation of worshipers, from that point on he was to be referred to as Saint Martius Defender of the Imperial Faith in the eternal God Empeor . As a consequence of his sainthood the world Martius’ Hope was renamed St Martius’ Hope.
EDIT :- Changed the time it took to make his a siant changed his title

I think Defender of the Faith sounds a bit better than Faith Up Holder- it's an actual RCC thing, though, so there may be a better choice out there. Also, 20 years is extremely quick for a sainthood in the real world, never mind the Imperium!

To avoind stepping on IP toes, Upholder of the Faith could work. I'd back the motion to delay his saintification by a century or two. Is good.

Before i continue reading your re-write necris, a point needs to be brought up which i forgot to do with the first version - there has never been an official mentioning of people being able to 'purchase' ranks.
Yes, during a regiments founding the officer cadre is quite often ranked in such a way that the people with the most prominent relations in the planets society tend to be at the top of the chain of command, but such is not possible beyond that level.
After the founding though, the vast majority of promotions are done on a whoes-best-for-the-job basis. For a commander to do otherwise is to put the lives of his men at risk.
The Imperial Guard are not the 18th century British Army.
I fully accept that in the Campaign High Command, a large number of promotions are all to do with politics, but not anywhere else.

I must jump in here and say that I thought it did happen, but since you mention it, no official background springs to mind to support that supposition. I think it is reasonable to think that somehting similar would work, though - the super rich agreeing advantageous trade treaties in exchange for promotions, or a similar network of minor corruption.

Actually, the purchase matter would depend on who was raising the regiment...after all, I imagine there are some worlds where the authorities will happily grant someone a commission for a little cash...or being the cousin of the governor, and so on...

Exactly. In the Imperium, there are no solid rules which affect every single planet. It's just too big.

i never said it wasn't possible within a regiment, infact i said the opposite - but beyond that, into a campaigns high command - it is far more often than not a whoes-best-for-the-job attitude with some politics mixed in - no incompitent commander would ever be elivated to such a level though, but a pragmatic tosser who also happens to have sound tactical ability would be.

Erm....not sure of that....I can see an incompetent tosser being raised to command if he was related to a High Lord, or somesuch....in fact, I'm pretty sure I can find examples, if I look deep enough....certainly in BL, if not other stuff...

[dives in mid-topic]
I quite favour the seccesionists idea, personally. After all, the greatest threat the Ecclesiarchy is free thinking and new ideas, not alien gribblies (btw, anyone know the where that word came from?). I also think the Ork spores idea is overused.
